English as the primary language in the VTS areas along the Finnish coast

To improve safety and to create a consistent maritime situational awareness, English as the primary language in the VTS areas along the Finnish coast will be adopted on the 1st of October 2019. As required, vessel traffic services are provided also in Finnish and Swedish. The change does not apply the Saimaa lake region.

The decision to establish a VTS has been updated and the new decision entered into force on the 3rd of May 2019. The decision is based on the Section 8 of the Vessel Traffic Service Act 623/2005 and it is given by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency.

The key changes apply to English as a primary communication language in the VTS areas along the Finnish coast, as well as changes in the Saimaa VTS area and reporting points in Lake Saimaa.
